I know you just "Stop Smoking". But, does anyone have any helpful hints or tips, re: getting through the first days - weeks, etc., more easily?

Tobacco companies have slowly increased the nicotine concentration in cigarettes by 15%. Remember that nicotine is a drug, and pure nicotine can kill you if it were available. I quit smoking when I was in hospital for 9 days. Today, quit smoking is extremely difficult, and you need a plan to follow. When I smoked, I loved a cigarette after meals and when drinking beer. Begin a trial with yourself that you will try to smoke X-number of cigrettes a day. You will fail of course along the way , but you need to try your best. For example, smoke when you get out of bed in the morning and and before you go to bed in the evening. Have a smoke after daily meals and any alcoholic drinks. Try not to let your temper take over from family events that put extra pressure on you and you need a smoke to calm down. Say, you will begin having 10 cigarettes a day with one or two extra. Each day or two, try to remove one cigarette from your list. Choose sugarless gum and sugar-free candies and cakes. I quit smoking before sugar-free and sugarless products were available. I chewed two to three packs of gum a day. In the end, it costs more to repair my teeth than all the costs for gum and candy.

If you think you can quit and need a support, ask your doctor about nicotine patches. My elder brother quit smoking this way. He began with the weakest and finished using two stronger patches to finally break the habit. To declare to yourself that you have quit smoking, carry a pack of cigarettes in your pocket for a short time to reenforce your will to quit smoking.

Good Luck.
