All tobacco plants have nicotine. Anything that has nicotine in it can lead to cancer. This does not mean that every person who smokes will get lung cancer--but some will. You can easily grow your own. However, the trick is in curing it (air-curing, fire-curing, flue-curing, etc) and blending it. Cigarettes are usually a blend of different kinds of tobaccos--Turkish, Burley, Virginia, etc
It really depends on what kind of pipe tobacco you are talking about. There are some that are dual use tobaccos that can be used in either roll your own cigarettes or pipes. These are very similar to a roll your own cigarette tobacco--only the cut is a little larger. As a general rule, if the package says "pipe cut" it is a dual use tobacco. A tobacco that is meant only for smoking in a pipe will not be labeled "pipe cut" and will be too moist and the cut will be too big for rolling ease.
Some brands that previously made cigarette tobacco have switched to a "pipe cut". Criss Cross, The Good Stuff, D&R blends, and Peter Stokkebye have recently came out with "pipe cut" tobaccos. I've heard that Bali might be coming out with one too. These "pipe cuts" are less expensive than their cigarette tobacco brothers because the huge SCHIP tax does not apply to anything labeled as pipe cut.
