As we move through the 110th Congress, it is very important for me to know my constituents’ views and concerns, and your letter has certainly helped in that regard. As you may already be aware, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies marijuana, together with heroin, LSD, methamphetamines, hashish, and a number of other drugs as Schedule I drugs. By definition, all Schedule I drugs must have a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use in treatment. Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug. According to the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, it was used by 76 percent of current illicit drug users.
I am concerned that legalization would result in increased abuse of all varieties of drugs. Therefore, I am strongly opposed to the legalization of marijuana. A 2002 SAMHSA report, Initiation of Marijuana Use: Trends, Patterns and Implications, concludes that the younger children are when they first use marijuana, the more likely they are to use cocaine and heroin and become dependent on drugs as adults. The report found that 62 percent of adults age 26 or older who had experimented with marijuana before they were 15 years old reported that they had used cocaine in their lifetime. More than 9 percent also reported they had used heroin and 53.9 percent reported non-medical use of psychotherapeutics. Increase in the likelihood of cocaine and heroin use and drug dependence are also apparent for those who initiate use of marijuana at any later age.
Health organizations, such as the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Cancer Society, do not support the legalization of cannabis. The AMA actually views it as a dangerous drug and a public health concern when used recreationally and even encourages strong discretion in its use for patients as the effects of long-term use are unclear. In addition, the National Institute on Drug Abuse conducted an exhaustive review of the medical literature and found inclusive evidence as to the value of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Finally, the bulk of our law enforcement community insists that legalization may increase crime and traffic fatalities and will hamper their efforts to prevent the spread of all types of drugs into our communities.

Has anybody studied the effects of cigarette smoking on the atmosphere? I'm wondering if anybody knows of data to show the contribution of cigarette smoking to CO2 emissions. Best Answer - Chosen by Asker Although, pollution caused from cigarette smoking is nil. There is a radioactive interaction when it is inhaled into the lungs producing a radioactive gas. The name of it slips my mind, It sounds like plutonium but it is not plutonium. That is actually what causes the cancer. It causes more cases of lung cancer than radon. If smoking in a building, that gas and nicotine can last for hours contained in a poor ventilated area. I had to do some research with this because of learning radiation safety and reading chest x-rays.
As far as the CO2 goes, we exhale that anyway. But there are other gases that the cigarrette produces that is harmeful. This pollution is not as bad as a trip to the store in a gas guzzeling car.

Why is it that only the State of California thinks cigarettes cause cancer? On the box of cigarettes I have it says, "This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm." Best Answer - Chosen by Asker Technically, as many as you wish, given that Portugal is in the EU and the cigarettes are/will be duty paid into Europe. ie, there is no duty due to British Customs when you bring them across the border in to Britain.
In reality, Customs ignore this and set a limit of 400 cigarettes per person and anyone exceeding this and who is unable to prove that they are for 'personal use' and for selling on at a profit is opening themselves for potentially a big fine for tax/duty evasion.
It is a stupid ruling and it is about time somebody challenged it in court, in my opinion.

Where do the large amounts of toxic heavy metals in hookah come from? I've been reading up recently on hookahs (as they are commonly called in North America) and I noticed in a few articles that hookah smoke apparently contains more toxic heavy metals (arsenic, nickel, cobalt, chromium, etc) than cigarette smoke. What causes hookah smoke to have higher concentrations of these metals than cigarette smoke? Best Answer - Chosen by Voters It seems to me that a whole lot would depend on what the "hookah" was constructed of, but it should be obvious that if there are metal parts there would also be metal contaminants. Cigarettes, OTOH, are made of tobacco and paper, and therefore contain only trace metals.
Inasmuch as the most common metals used for such stuff are brass and copper, it would make sense that any toxic heavy metals would either arise from impurities in these, or from the solders that may be used to join them. I don't think the metals you listed would be first on the list though - I'd look for lead, cadmium, etc.
Edit to Thumbs-downer: If you have a better answer, please post it. Assuming the same material is being smoked, the only additional variables in the "hookah" are the metal parts (which I've addressed), the water, and the ceramic/glass components if any. Ceramic glazes could contribute, but I still feel that if the presence of more "heavy metals" is true, they probably come mostly from metal components of the pipe. The water is a separate issue.

There is an endless amount of ways to help save the environment, from just picking up one piece of rubbish, to starting a worldwide organization. There are lots of different types of pollution and in each one there are many different things that cause it.
Probably, the most dangerous type of pollution is air pollution. We breathe in air every day, but if air pollution takes over, it’s easy to imagine what would happen. The ozone layer would wear away and it is the only natural barrier protecting the Earth from the Sun. Lots of people would get heart or respiratory problems. Global warming will be fed more and more, and as a result, the Earth will get warmer and warmer. It’s just like in The Lorax; the city of Thneedville is taken over by plastic objects, after all the trees are cut down to make thneeds (a wooly, multi-purpose jumper), and there are no real plants, just fake plastic ones. People in Thneedville have to buy oxygen to keep them alive. Air pollution is mainly caused by vehicle exhaust fumes, such as a car, bus, train or plane. Large factories that have chimneys also pollute the air; this shows just how inconsiderate some companies are. They would rather save money, than save the Earth and the generations to come. One way to save the environment is to use electric-powered vehicles; they produce about a quarter of the pollution an average car produces. You can always ride a bike or walk to nearby places. Using green energy to heat up things such as water, instead of gas, would also make a huge impact on the environment. Green energy is a type of energy generated by eco-friendly things, like solar panels for example. Solar panels use the Sun’s rays to generate power around a house. Other eco-friendly ways to generate energy is to use hydro-electricity (made by water turning a turbine), and wind turbines (made by the wind turning turbines).

Trees help humans and other animals a lot; trees enrich the Earth with oxygen, for humans to breathe in, they help humans and animals by providing wood for shelter and warmth. They also help save nutrients from being washed away. Unfortunately, people have cut down billions of trees and never planted new ones to replace them. This shows us how greedy we are, and how careful we need to be. But, fortunately, everyone can do something to help. To reduce the amount of litter, put rubbish in the correct bins (recycling, rubbish, glass, etc.) and pick up litter that you see on the streets. If everyone in the world did this, in the course of a year, two trillion, five hundred and fifty-five pieces (2,555,000,000,000) would have been picked up. Ask everyone around you to stop buying plastic as much and use recyclable or reusable materials. Start your own garden and use natural fertilizers, like compost or worm farm juice, after that, sell your own free-range vegetables to your neighbours, but stay clear of using plastic bags to store them in. Volunteer in an environment group such as KCC (Kiwi Conservation Club), there is probably a local group near you. Plant trees in local reserves with the permission of the Auckland City Council with your group.

What can we do to stop smokey air from coming in our townhouse even when the windows and doors are closed?
