How can I tell if it is a carbon monoxide or smoke detector?
It has not markings what so ever. Is there anyway tell if it is a carbon monoxide detector, smoke detector, or both?

get someone to light a cigarette and cause smoke near it to make it go off - i don't suggest the open butane trick as somewhere else a light switch may flick, or an automatic thing cut in like a fridge and before you know it you are in heaven ahead of time....
if you do it this way make sure it is well ventilated...
