What is an appropriate gift to bring from the USA to a family in China?

It depends on how personal the gifts are. Many of my Chinese Female friends like cosmetics... Face creams and such. It's cheaper to get the USA product in the USA. In HK US brand cosmetics are expensive and are much more expensive on the mainland.
Do you Chinese friends understand English well? Maybe you could bring a book someone likes? Maybe a TEA/COFFEE table book. Those books that show a city are great Coffee table books. Los Angles, New York, San Francisco etc...
The Chinese can get Whiskey in China. All most all brands. Yes there are several unique brands they can't get. Also if your friends smoke you could bring some USA Brand cigarettes to them. Offering cigarettes to male Chinese is a social thing to do.
For kids you could bring a Popular CD. But if they have a computer they most likely have the latest Lady Gaga music. You could bring Children some Candy. Again China now has a lot of Western Candy. But if the candy comes from the USA then it may be different to them. DOVE Chocolate is very Popular and so is Ferrero Rocher. But is that something that will make them go AHHH!. Yes in the USA if we see Chinese writing it is sort of cool. But The Ferrero Rocher in China has English on it. If I were to bring candy I would go for See's Candy. http://www.sees.com/ or...
